Master’s Message, September 2023

Brethren of Acacia,

Welcome to a new dawn in the history of Acacia Lodge No. 561. While we look back with fond memories of our time spent at Westboro Temple, we have a long future ahead of us in our new home in Richmond.

We will hit the ground running this year, with several degrees to look forward to as well as just being back in lodge with one another.

Our work for this upcoming meeting will include a memorial for W. Bro. Glenn Fleck who passed to the Grand Lodge Above during the summer break. We will also be going to the third degree to allow Bro. Perkins to prove himself and carry on with his masonic journey.

We will also be balloting for a new SW and Secretary as we, unfortunately, lost those brethren over the summer. I wish them well as they continue their journeys with whichever lodge they elect to join in the future.

There will also be a notice of motion to amend our bylaws as we have moved, and our bylaws need to reflect this change of address.

The DDGM, Kosta Hatzis, will also be joining us for his fraternal visit in the September meeting. Look forward to lots of gold on opening night.

I look forward to seeing you all very soon.

Master’s Message, June 2023

Brethren of Acacia,

It is unfortunate that my first summons to you all is of an emergent nature, however, the future of Acacia needs to be decided by all of us.

As you are aware there have been discussions and research as to the future viability of Acacia 561 remaining in Westboro Temple. A special CGP was conducted this past Monday, June 12th, where options for our future were tabled, voted upon, and passed.

This emergent meeting will finalize the vote and officially vote on our future meeting residence. It was recommended and near-unanimously approved, that Goodwood Lodge, 3494 McBean St., Richmond, Ontario would be our new home. Many factors were considered and discussed before voting and it is with great sadness that the decision to vacate Westboro Temple, our home for nearly 100 years, has had to be made.

Your attendance at this emergent meeting is especially necessary and your attendance would be greatly appreciated if within the length of your cable tow to do so.

Master’s Message, May 2023

Brothers of Acacia,

Well look at that it is the end of another Masonic year. I am excited for the future of Acacia lodge and for the Officers that have chosen to move forward.

As this is my last message of my year in the chair of King Solomon. I thank all the support and friendship from Acacia for helping make this year go by fast and with ease. We now embark on a very big discussion in the next couple meetings about Acacia venue let us remember that as Freemasons we support each other and help each other in this decision. Let us all remember what is a Freemason. Brotherly Love, Relief and Truth.

Hope to see you all at CGP on May 1st and at our Regular Meeting on May 16th. CGP meeting start at 7:30 pm and the Regular meeting start at 7 pm for our installation.

Sincerely and Fraternally,

Brothers of Acacia,

Well it is already March and we only have a few months left in this Masonic Year. We extend a warm welcome our new Brother, Mathew Van Seters. Great job everyone on Mathew’s First Degree.

As we head into this month, we have two more candidates to Initiate. We will have some visitors helping this month as we have a few members out of town, or unavailable.

We are bringing the Traveling Gavel to Russell on Monday March 20th. Let’s have a good turn out as this is the DDGM’s home lodge.

With a good turn out at our Official visit last month, I like to say Great Work everyone. Thank you to those who reached out to our seldom seen Brothers and reported back on their situation during our yearly Roll Call. A big thank you also to the Brothers who came early to clean and set up the Lodge.

This month we are receiving the Traveling Gavel and we are initiating a candidate to our family at Acacia. The DDGM may be in attendance.

Master’s Message, January 2023

Brothers of Acacia:

I hope everyone is well rested and healthy. As we finish 2022, I was very pleased with the great turn out we had at our Christmas Potluck Festive Board. Thanks to our Senior Warden, Bro. Derek Brook, for all his hard work in organizing the potluck and for those helping out. Brothers of Acacia, I appreciated your participation at our December meeting and for helping to bring back our traditional potluck after it was cancelled for two years due to the Pandemic.

As we enter the New Year, with half our Masonic year still left, we have our DDGM night, the traveling Gavel and some upcoming First Degrees in the next few months. It’s going to be a busy time for Acacia. Please make every effort to attend our January meeting when the DDGM makes his Official Visit to Acacia.

Hope to see you all at CGP on January 9, 2023 at 7:30pm and at our Regular Meeting on January 17th at 7:00 pm.

Sincerely and Fraternally,

Frank Sigouin

Master’s Message, December 2022

Brothers of Acacia:

It is that time of year where we celebrate good festivities with loved ones. As our last meeting of 2022, we are having our traditional potluck dinner. After three years it’s time to reacquaint ourselves with family and friends.

This meeting will be short one. We will have a memorial to W. Bro. Donald Williams, Past Master of Acacia Lodge 1995-1996.

Hope to see you all at CGP on December 5th and at our Regular Meeting on December 20th 2022 at 7:30pm.

Merry Christmas and to all a Happy New Year.

Sincerely and Fraternally,

Frank Sigouin,

Master’s Message, November 2022

Brothers of Acacia,

First, I would like to congratulate our newest Master Mason, Bro. David Perkins. Special thanks are extended to the Shriners Degree team who did an exemplary job of Raising Bro. Perkins to the Third Degree. We were also pleased to welcome our District Deputy Grand Master R.W. Bro. Jim Bowman who attended this Regular Meeting on October 18, 2022.

Bro. Chris Zuger, was ably invested as our Inner Guard by W. Bro. Don Learning. October has come and gone. November is the time to remember our past and present veterans. We will be conducting our Empty Chair Ceremony at our Regular Meeting on November 15, 2022. We will also be voting on a Candidate for Initiation, Mr. Mathew Vansetters.

As most of you are aware, W. Bro. Sam Roberts has indicated he will be putting his name forward as a candidate for DDGM for Masonic Year 2024-25. I fully support this announc ement and woul d we l come comments from any of the members of Acacia Lodge with respect to W. Bro. Roberts intentions.

In closing I hope you had a happy Halloween and enjoyed the spooky costumes that visited your door.

Sincerely and Fraternally,

Frank Sigouin

Master’s Message, October 2022

Brothers of Acacia,

Before I begin my message, I would like to pass along the Lodge’s condolences and prayers to Bro. Chris Zuger, whose father passed away just before our September meeting.

For those that missed our September meeting it was a shame. We held a Memorial Tribute for R.W. Bro. Michael Jenkyns, and Bro. Harold Morrison who recently Passed to the Grand Lodge Above. Our historian, W. Bro. Neil Lillico presented biographies of these two deceased Brothers which contained many interesting stories of their lives and contributions in life. We also invested V. W. Bro. Bill Gordon as the Tyler. In addition, we were pleased to welcome R.W. Bro. Charles Singh, Past DDGM, who attended Acacia specifically because of the Memorial Tributes that were part of the evening’s events.

This month, we are pleased to welcome the Shrine Degree Team who will be raising Brother David Perkins to the Sublime Degree of a Master Mason. Bro. Perkins has been patiently waiting for this since Covid interrupted our normal schedule of events. Ottawa District One DDGM, R.W. Bro. Jim Bowman will be in attendance to see the Degree Team. We will also be investing Bro. Chris Zuger as our Inner Guard.

As some of you may have heard, W. Bro. Sam Roberts would like to proffer his name as a candidate for DDGM in 2025. If anyone has any feedback they would like to share, in confidence, please let me know.

October is Thanksgiving month and I hope everyone is able to spend time with family and friends so as to fully appreciate our good fortune as Masons and Canadians.

Hope to see you all at next month’s CGP and at our Regular Meeting on October 18th, 2022 at 7:30 p.m.

Sincerely and Fraternally,

Frank Sigouin

Master’s Message, September 2022

Brothers of Acacia,

The summer has come and gone. We didn’t have a chance to meet this summer, but there is aways our breakfast outing coming up in the fall.

This is a full new Masonic year after the Pandemic. Let’s make it a great year. We will have our 100th Anniversary party that was taken from us by the Covid Pandemic. It will be an Acacia party with our own Lodge and families.

We will be having the Shriners Degree Team doing our Third Degree for Bro. David Perkins this year. We will also be doing a First degree in this coming year.

In closing, I hope see you at our September meeting where we will be remembering R.W. Bro. Mike Jenkyns and Bro. Harold Morrison both of whom we lost during the summer recess. We also lost our Honourary Member, M.W. Bro. Don Mumby, Past Grand Master (2003-2005).

I’ll look forward to your attendance at our Committee of General Purposes Meeting on September 13, 2022.

Hope to see you all at CGP and at our Regular Meeting on September 20, 2022 at 7:30pm.

Sincerely and Fraternally,

Master’s Message, May 2022

My Brethren,

May is here, spring is in the air, Covid is on the decline, and Installation is imminent!

As I vacate the Chair of King Solomon, I thank you for the opportunity you’ve given me and for the memories gathered along the way.

On May 17 we will install Bro. Frank Sigouin for the upcoming masonic year. Bro. Sigouin, as you all know, has a deep love of the Craft. His enthusiasm will be a benefit to everyone and we should be honoured to have him as our next Master.

Our District Deputy Grand Master, R.W Bro. Glen Simpson, will be joining us in person for Installation. His presence will bring a welcome spark to the proceedings and serve to remind us of the larger body of which we are part.

When you come into the Lodge room this month, you will note that our Warrant has been draped. This is done in memory of our Past Grand Master, MW. Bro. Donald Mumby. MW Mumby was a giant among masons, Custodian of the Work, and the author of many of the rubrics in the Book of the Work. We will cherish his memory in our hearts, and hold him as an example to which we can all aspire.

So, Brethren. We have much for which to be grateful, and much to anticipate. Please keep those who cannot join us in Lodge in your thoughts, encourage those who can travel to come out, and keep safe, always.

Sincerely and Fraternally,

Donald Learning

Master’s Message, April 2022

My Brethren,

It was a wonderful feeling to get back in Lodge last month and to see the smiles on familiar faces. Your support during our shut down was truly amazing, and augurs well for our resumption and regrowth.

Speaking of resumption, the Temple Corporation gave an encouraging update at the recent AGM. It was welcome news to hear that the Hall rentals are slowly coming back, and that the basement renovation is almost complete save for a deep cleaning.

Our Senior Warden is calling for an in-person CGP this month. We will take advantage of the time to do a short practice in the Lodge Room afterwards.

There will be both a Regular and Emergent Meeting this month. Lodge Elections will be held at the former, and our “Step up Night” at the latter. I hope as many of you as are able will attend to cast your vote, and to support next year’s slate of Officers.

While provincial Covid restrictions are lifting, the pandemic is not yet over. For certain, some brethren have health and home situations that will keep them away a while longer. We respect your personal choice to avoid attending lodge until it feels right.

I look forward to greeting you again, in person, and to our upcoming elections and installation.

Sincerely and Fraternally,

Donald Learning
Worshipful Master

Master’s Message, March 2022

My Brethren,

Let there be light! As restrictions are lifting I am glad that we can begin again our in person meetings. Our CGP will continue as a virtual event for now.

Your perseverance and steady support during the pandemic are a reminder of our strength as a brotherhood. It has been a long 2 years and a truly weird way to mark our 100th anniversary. This month we will have some catch up to do on the business side, a rusty mason review after 2 years of absence, and the resumption of work to revitalize our membership.

My recent visits to Carleton and Edinburgh Lodges were very instructive as to how we can provide a safe and comfortable environment. Since the provincial requirement for vaccine verification has been lifted, you can expect a normal entry into the Lodge. Masks are still required.

We respect your personal choice to avoid attending lodge until it feels right. For certain, some brethren have health and home situations that will keep them away a while longer.

Since this will be our first gathering since turning 100 years, we can now wear our gold bordered aprons, and will be using our new Lodge regalia. I look forward to greeting you again, in person, and to our upcoming elections and installation.

Sincerely and Fraternally,

Donald Learning

Master’s Message, February 2022

My Brethren,

I would like to thank everyone for attending last month’s Official Visit by our District Deputy Grand Master, RW Bro. Glen Simpson. A special thanks is also due to those who brought regrets and updates during the Annual Roll Call.

The presentation by our DDGM on his visit was quite enlightening. While some lodges have been quiet during the pandemic, the message from the DDGM is that our Lodge and District has been exceptional in keeping masonry alive through virtual meetings and education.

Now that we have received the Travelling Gavel from Temple Lodge No. 665, it falls to us to perpetuate the tradition of fraternal visitation. We will be bringing the gavel to Russell Lodge No. 479, virtually, on February 21. I hope that you will attend.

We currently have 2 men who’ve expressed interest in joining Acacia. As restrictions relax, we may soon be able to meet with these gentlemen, and hopefully progress in the regrowth of Acacia. If you’ve received any enquiries about freemasonry, please engage actively, and help in growing the fraternity.

W.Bro. Lillico still seeking personal biographies for the Lodge history. There is no time better than now to craft a few words about yourself. If you need a template or encouragement, W.Bro. Lillico stands at the ready.

I look forward to seeing you all at this month’s Jitsi meeting, and hope we can soon gather again in person.

Sincerely and Fraternally,

Master’s Message, January 2022

My Brethren,

I trust you all had a peaceful and relaxing Christmas, and wish you good health and prosperity in the New Year.

This month we will be joined by R.W. Bro. Glen Simpson for our DDGM Official Visit. I hope that as many of you as are able will join me in welcoming him to our virtual gathering. Even though our meeting will be virtual, I would ask that you dress in jacket and tie so as to afford the DDGM the level of formality deserving of his rank.

As is our tradition in January we will conducting our Annual Roll Call this month, and will also be receiving the Travelling Gavel from our brethren at Temple Lodge.

The Roll Call is an important opportunity to count ourselves present, and to share information about those brethren who are unable to join us. If you are in touch with any Brother that has not been at our get togethers, please take the opportunity to speak for them at Roll Call, and let us know how they are doing.

I look forward to seeing everyone in person in 2022 when the pandemic is behind us, and hope that you are taking every precaution to stay safe until then.

Sincerely and Fraternally,

Master’s Message, December 2021

My Brethren,

It is hard to believe that 2022 is almost upon us!

I would like to take this opportunity to wish you, your family, and loved ones a safe and joyous holiday.

While it is disheartening that we cannot again safely gather for our Christmas Pot Luck, I have every faith that 2022 will see the happy revival of our Lodge traditions.

At last month’s virtual meeting you expressed unanimous support for a donation to the flood disaster relief in British Columbia. W.Bro. Lillico has actioned your request and should have a report for us at this month’s meeting.

Bro. Secretary regularly reaches out some of our more seasoned members, and has reminded me of the need to energize our Sick and Visiting activity. I have been in touch with W.Bro. Roberts to this end and look forward to some in-person visits in the New Year.

In closing, I would like to thank-you for your steady support of Acacia over the past year. Everyone’s concern for one another, your ideas, and ready hand to help, gives me pride to stand among you.

I cherish the bond that makes us Brothers, and look forward to seeing you at this month’s virtual meeting.

Master’s Message, November 2021

My Brethren,

By now you will have read the latest communication from Grand Lodge and may be wondering when Acacia will be meeting again in-person.

To that end, the Executive of the Westboro Temple Corporation has met to establish protocols for Lodge use of the building. Their plan will be presented to the WMTL Board of Directors the day before our November virtual meeting. I expect Bro. Sigouin will have an update for us when we meet on the 16th.

As it stands, the social distancing, contact tracing, mask-wearing, and rules around eating will make for a marked departure from our customary experience. With the continued health concerns expressed by some of our members, I believe it prudent to await the further lifting of Provincial Government restrictions before resuming our ritual. The expected availability of Westboro Temple should soon allow us to book in-person CGP’s and practices.

February/March 2022 appears to be the timeframe for the further lifting of Provincial health mandates, and is thus the target for the resumption of regular Acacia Lodge meetings.

It has been a difficult couple of years with the pandemic, but the Remembrance Day commemorations this month should give us perspective.

I cherish the bond that makes us brothers, and look forward to seeing you at this month’s virtual meeting.

Sincerely and Fraternally,

W.Bro. Donald Learning

Master’s Message, October 2021

My Brethren,

I hope you enjoyed last month’s presentation by our Deputy Grand Master and the perspectives R.W. Bro. Hogeboom shared. Your engagement in the discussion following the talk no doubt gave the Deputy a sense that the topic resonated. For those who cannot remember, R.W. Bro. Hogeboom recommended the Netflix show, “The Young Pope” as it relates to old institutions such as ours.

By now you will have received the latest update from Grand Lodge regarding reopening. While we may not be able to gather in person until the new year, we will continue to meet via Jitsi with W.Bro. Plummer’s support. We will, of course, organize practice before reopening, and will treat our first gathering as a rusty mason night.

During the discussion at our August Budget Meeting, W.Bro. Lillico shared some membership demographics. Our Lodge finances are solid, but the average age of our members is creeping higher. When we are able to hold breakfasts again we hope we can invite seekers to meet us. With that in mind, please keep your ears open to expressions of interest from good men.

I look forward to seeing you at this month’s virtual meeting, and hope you will share any ideas you may have for masonic education.

Sincerely and Fraternally,

W. Bro. Donald Learning
Worshipful Master

Master’s Message, September 2021

My Brethren,

I trust that you all had an enjoyable summer and that you are looking forward to gathering again soon in person.

The traditional GLAN cannot be held this year. In its place, we have a special guest to speak to us at this month’s virtual meeting. Thanks go to RW Bro. Burchill for suggesting the speaker, and to W.Bro. Harrison for extending the invitation.

You will notice our latest Budget delivered with this month’s Summons. W.Bro. Lillico is projecting a small surplus and there is no pressure to raise dues. Likewise, the District is unlikely to raise our assessment and still has unspent money from last year to support the DDGM’s work.

As we begin our first meeting of the year, 3 things stand ahead. We will soon be launching work to refresh Acacia’s By-laws; we will be seeking a successor to relieve our long-serving Treasurer; and we will be asking brethren to plant the thought of masonry in the minds of worthy and honourable men they may know.

I look forward to seeing you at this month’s meeting, and to feeling once again the bonds that we share.

Sincerely and Fraternally,

W. Bro. Donald Learning
Worshipful Master

Master’s Message, May 2021

My Brethren,

First and foremost, I would like to thank you for the turn out at Temple Lodge for our fraternal visit on May 4. It was great to maintain our travelling tradition, and to partake of the Masonic education presented by RW. Bros. Ireland and Christie.

At Acacia’s virtual meeting this month the agenda will be light. We will wrap up the year with an informal focus on Lodge affairs and the usual wellness check. If you are in touch with any Brother who has not been joining our virtual get-togethers, I hope you will share their news at the meeting.

This year, as last, our Lodge has been obliged to remain dark. As vaccination numbers increase, though, we hold growing hope for reopening, the election of a new slate of Lodge Officers, and the resumption of Degree work.

In the interim, direction from Grand Lodge has been received and distributed by Brother Secretary. In summary:

  • DDGM: We will be registering for remote voting of a new DDGM from 12-17 June with actual remote voting on 20-21 June.
  • Other GL Officers: Remote Registration for voting will take place 12-18 July, followed by Remote voting on the 19-20 July.

Direction is expected in due course on what will be authorized for the election and installation of new officers at the Lodge level.

I have no doubt that our pandemic experiences will come to mind from now on when we reflect on the mosaic pavement in the Lodge. Our common experience of life’s changing fortunes is one we can now all share when crossing that pavement.

In closing, please be assured that as soon as Covid restrictions are lifted we will be gathering again for some Breakfasts, holding our BBQ, and greeting each other warmly; hand-to-hand, Brother-to-Brother.

Sincerely and Fraternally,

W.Bro. Donald Learning

Master’s Message, April 2021

My Brethren,

Thank-you all for attending last month’s virtual meeting and for welcoming both our Grand Lodge visitors and the delegation from Edinburgh Lodge.

Since we cannot do our traditional Travelling Gavel this year, it might be worth paying a virtual fraternal visit next month. We could don attire appropriate for a Lodge meeting, and reaffirm our bonds within the district.

I’ve received great feedback on last month’s presentation by Bro. Kidd. Based on the discussion it provoked, Bro. Kidd touched a nerve. Hopefully we can use what he taught in our post-pandemic fervour for travel.

Like many of you, I was shocked to learn of the recent arson attacks on Lodges in Vancouver. While rare, these things give pause as to what could happen while we are peacefully gathered upstairs at Westboro.

The Tyler’s role has an importance beyond simply minding the Register, and his sword represents a vigilance he keeps for our benefit. When we gather again in person, it might be worth considering if the downstairs door should be locked while we are at work in the Lodge room.

W.Bro. Harrison has passed along material from Grand Lodge which I hope you have had the chance to review. It remains to be determined what we can do at the Lodge level for elections.

There are only a few items of silver lodge regalia remaining, so if you are looking for an Acacia souvenir, the cost is a mere $25. Please contact W.Bro. Harrison if you are interested.

As always, my thanks are due to all of you for maintaining your interest in Masonry. Since we can’t do ritual during the shutdown, I will only ask that you consider completing your biography, if you haven’t already done so.

In closing, I have to say that these days when I put on a mask I remember my initiation and the lesson wherein I was “taught to be cautious.”

Sincerely and Fraternally,

W.Bro. Donald Learning

Master’s Message, March 2021

My Brethren,

First of all, I would like to thank Bro. Peter Taylor for reaching out and getting our mailing list up-to-date.

We’d lost contact with Bro. Taylor and were at a loss as to how we could find him. Lucky for us, he reads the printed summons’ and got in touch. It is a reminder that in spite of email, text and social media, the printed summons is still relevant and essential.

Bro. Secretary has been in touch with some Grand Lodge Officers who may be visiting us at this month’s meeting. As well, a contingent from Edinburgh Lodge will likely join in. I hope as many of you as possible can be with us this month to meet our Grand Lodge visitors, and to renew the fellowship we enjoy with Edinburgh.

Following on from your agreement at past virtual meetings, Acacia has made a donation to the WMTL in support of renovations at Westboro Temple. In return for our donation, we will be receiving credits at discounted rates to use the Banquet Hall, once the pandemic is over.

This month’s Masonic Education will be given by Bro. David Kidd. Bro. Kidd is currently living in Hawaii and has done quite a bit of travelling due to work. I am looking forward to learning about his travels outside of our jurisdiction, his observations on the working of masonry in other countries, and his experience in finding and joining with Masons in distant lands. The selling off of our silver lodge regalia is ongoing. If you are looking for an Acacia souvenir, the cost is a nominal $25. Please contact W.Bro. Harrison if you are interested.

As always, W.Bro. Stephen Plummer has been awesome about organizing our on-line get-togethers. If you need a hand with the virtual format, please reach out to W.Bro. Plummer directly and he can help you connect.

Sincerely and Fraternally

Master’s Message, February 2021

My Brethren,

I would like to thank everyone for attending last month’s Annual Roll Call and especially to those of you who brought updates from Brethren who could not attend. Bro. Secretary noted that we’ve lost contact with Bro. Peter Taylor. Bro. Taylor’s email no longer works and attempts to contact him have failed. Should you be able to help us contact Bro. Taylor, please let W.Bro. Harrison know.

The presentation by our DDGM on his “virtual official visit” was quite enlightening. It is a treat when R.W. Bro. Christie visits, and his most recent talk shed light on the work of the District Deputy, and his budget.

Alas, the pandemic drags on. Thoughts on resuming our Lodge meetings is top-of-mind, however, V.W. Bro. Gordon has offered a series of steps we should consider to smooth the process, Temple Corporation work parties continue to advance basement renovations at Westboro, and the need to convene a committee for our 2022 Bylaw Review has been signalled.

W.Bro. Lillico has proposed that we sell off our silver lodge regalia now that we will be wearing gold. The proposal has been adopted and the collars are being sold at a nominal cost of $25 each. You now have a chance to own a piece of Acacia’s history for a wall hanging or shadow box. Please contact W.Bro. Harrison if you are interested.

This month there is no masonic education booked for our virtual meeting. If you have a piece you would like to present, please let me know. In the meantime, we will use our meeting to keep the calendar alive, stay in touch, and share a little mirth.

W.Bro. Stephen Plummer has been awesome about organizing our on-line get-togethers and I hope you will try to join us. If you need a hand with the virtual format, please reach out to W.Bro. Plummer directly and he can help you connect.

Sincerely and Fraternally,

Master’s Message, January 2021

My Brethren,

I trust you all had a peaceful and relaxing Christmas, and that the troubles we’ve endured in 2020 will soon be behind us.

You may recall that at this time last year, Bro. Brook organized a presentation from the Ottawa Men’s Mission. While we cannot support them by contracting catering services right now, the Lodge has been able to send them a donation. Your encouragement to support the Mission is much appreciated and I hope we will be able to work with them again soon on some catered events, once Lodge meetings resume.

As we normally host our DDGM Official Visit in January, R.W. Bro. Jeff Christie has offered to join us at this month’s Virtual Meeting. He will also be our guest speaker and Masonic Educator. I hope that as many of you as are able will join me in welcoming R.W. Bro. Christie.

Our Annual Roll Call will be conducted at this month’s Virtual Meeting. We will count ourselves present when Bro. Secretary calls our name, and will carry messages from those brethren who are unable to attend. If you are in touch with any Brother that has not been at our get-togethers, please take the opportunity to speak for them at Roll Call, and let us know how they are doing.

Since our report in November on the Basement Renovation at Westboro, WMTL has been looking for ways to offer something tangible in return for financial support. In this vein, we expect that they will be offering discounted credit towards the use of the Banquet Hall and Bar. The per-use cost for each credit should be known in the next month or so.

I am looking forward to seeing you in person in 2021 and hope that you are all staying safe.

Sincerely and Fraternally,

Master’s Message, December 2020

My Brethren,

As the Christmas season is upon us, I would like to wish you, your family, and loved ones a safe and joyous holiday!

We usually celebrate the season with our Christmas Pot Luck but this being a “special” time, we are obligated to keep our distance. I can’t wait to have a bigger potluck, more wine, and greater mirth when the pandemic is behind us.

Our thanks go out to R.W.Bro. Burchill who treated us to a great piece of masonic education last month. The story of “Ed, Fred, and Ted” drove home the message that while we may approach the door of the Lodge for different reasons, the nature of masonry offers many paths for every brother to
find fulfillment.

Since our last meeting, the 4-Lodge Centennial Committee met and decided to closeout our efforts to hold a joint celebration. Monies that were paid up front for the Banquet and Ceremony were forfeit, however, when we were forced to cancel. While we could not reclaim what was spent for the hall, banquet and band, we will not be obliged to pay out the full contract. Funds left in the bank will be divided equally among the 4 Lodges.

Your feedback last month on Charity, and the Basement Renovation, is much appreciated. Normally we use CGP for these dialogues, but,
again, these are special times. I am happy to report that the Temple Board has provided the project budget, and a fuller explanation of their work. By the time we hold our next virtual meeting, you should have that material to peruse.

In closing, please remember that annual dues are payable by year-end. As disheartening as it is that we cannot meet in-Lodge, your financial support remains vital.

I look forward to seeing you on-line, and hope that 2021 will see us gathered happily again, in-person.

Sincerely and Fraternally,

Master’s Message, November 2020

My Brethren,

I would like to thank everyone for making the time to join our monthly virtual meetings, and for keeping masonry in your hearts. While the isolation imposed by social distancing can be disheartening, I am glad to see everyone online and to hear your voices.

Thanks are due to W.Bro. Lillico for his historical presentation last month on life in 1920, and also to those of you who reached out to the Brethren who missed the last get-together.

November is usually a special month for us, and the time when we recognize those members of Acacia who have served both in war and in peacetime. Sadly, we have to add our Empty Chair Ceremony to the list of traditions we must forego this year.

It was proposed recently that we make a donation to the Men’s Mission. We were unable to hire them for GLAN this year, and will not be able to help them with work at DD Night. W. Bro. Lillico advises that our finances should be strong enough to support a donation since our budget for Festive Boards is going untouched.

Since our last meeting, we received a note from W.Bro. David Brown on behalf of the Temple Board. The renovations to the basement at Westboro have not yet been completed, and the space could be a significant source of revenue once Covid restrictions are lifted. While no work can be undertaken immediately, it would appear that the Temple Board will be seeking financial support to finish the project.

In closing, I would like to call upon anyone with ideas for Masonic education or related topics to get in touch. It was a consensus at the September meeting that regular talks are of interest, so I would like to fill up a schedule of topics and speakers.

I look forward to seeing and hearing you on-line, and hope that we will soon be able to meet again in-person. As always, if you need any assistance, please let any
Lodge officer know.

Sincerely and Fraternally,

W.Bro. Donald Learning

Master’s Message, October 2020

My Brethren,

My thanks to everyone for keeping in touch with one another, and for supporting our virtual get-togethers. It was heartwarming to have so many sign-in to our last meeting, and to even have W. Bro. Gravelle take a break to join us from his car!

Last month’s presentation by the Grand Master was a thought-provoking start to our year. His talk reminded us of the opportunities to live the values we share as Masons, and while tradition may constrain us in some ways, an open mind and heart does not.

Even though we cannot conduct our usual Masonic Business, Ritual or voting, W.Bro. Plummer’s has offered to keep organizing our monthly meet-up on our Regular Meeting night. With your participation as encouragement, we will keep up the effort to meet online, share news and maintain our bond.

As you may have all heard, W.Bro. Bruce Quinney, a Past Master and longtime member of Acacia passed to the Grand Lodge Above on October 3. As well, W.Bro. Jack Earnshaw’s wife, Susan Hawe, passed away on September 15. I hope we can share a moment’s silence at our next gathering, to reflect on our happy memories
of them, the good that they represented, and the legacy
they have left.

There was general consensus at our September gathering that we should plan some masonic education this month. As we are still in our anniversary year, I’ve asked W.Bro. Neil Lillico to give us a brief historical talk this month. He will no doubt preface and conclude his presentation with a request for personal biographies, so, well, please don’t be surprised.

I look forward to seeing and hearing you on-line and hope that we will soon be able to meet again in-person. As always, if you need any assistance, please let any Lodge officer know.

Please wear a mask, wash your hands, and stay safe.

Sincerely and Fraternally,

W.Bro. Donald Learning

Master’s Message, September 2020

My Brethren,

We are living in interesting times. I hope that this note finds you and your family well and that in spite of the Covid-19 isolation, that you are holding masonry in your hearts.

As sad as it was to see our Silver-to-Gold event slip from our hands, time marched on. We are now a 100 year old Lodge and will deploy our new Lodge regalia, and proudly wear our new aprons when next we meet.

W. Bros. Harrison and Lillico have been unrelenting through the darkness. They have been maintaining the Lodge business and Grand Lodge correspondence on our behalf. We will be able to resume in-person gatherings as soon as it is safe to do so. Acacia is alive and well.

W. Bro. Plummer has lead several on-line get-togethers over the summer to keep us in touch. It’s been fun to see how shaggy we have become when we live in bubbles and wear masks! With W.Bro. Plummer’s help we can maintain our spirit of brotherhood until we can meet again in person.

This September, we will obviously not be able to hold our traditional Grand Lodge Appreciation Night or regular meetings. Likewise we could not elect and install a new slate of Officers before the lockdown.

The plan going forward, is to remain dark with regard to in-person meetings and any ritual. When public health authorities deem it safe, we will cautiously resume operations, catch up on degree work, and celebrate the brotherhood we have been missing.

If you would like to join any of the virtual get-togethers it would be great to see you. If you need any assistance, as always, let any Lodge officer know.

Please wear a mask, and stay safe.

Sincerely and Fraternally,

W.Bro. Donald Learning

Master’s Message, March 2020

My Brethren,

Time flies and our Centennial Celebration is upon us. On Saturday, March 14 we will be gathering at Tudor Hall with the Grand Master, Grand Lodge Officers, and 3 other Lodges for our combined Silver-to-Gold Ceremony. The Lodge will tyle at 1 pm.

The Ceremony will be conducted as an emergent meeting with Sydney Albert Luke as the host lodge. They will do the opening/closing, and Grand Lodge will conduct the Silver-to-Gold portion.

Our Grand Historian, RW Bro. Mike Jenkyns, will be giving a short presentation on the history of the 4 Lodges over the past 100 years. After closing the lodge, those who have booked a reservation will return at 6 pm. for our Banquet and Dance.

Brethren, even if you do not plan to attend the Banquet, please make an effort to come to the Lodge portion of the day. Many fine men have gone before us, and this is Acacia’s chance to recognize and celebrate the 100 Years we’ve devoted to Freemasonry.

The dress for the lodge meeting will be white tie for Grand Lodge Officers, Tuxedo for Lodge Officers, and dark business suit for all others. Tuxedo can be worn at the Banquet, if you wish, to complement the Ladies.

Silver aprons are to be worn for the Centennial Lodge Meeting. Our first occasion to wear the gold ones will be at our Regular Meeting on March 17. Work on the Acacia centennial challenge coins by W.Bro. Harrison and Bro. Perkins continues. We hope to have the coins ready for distribution before the end of the masonic year.

In addition to the Centennial Lodge on the 14th, our Regular Lodge meeting will go ahead as normally scheduled on Tuesday, (March 17). It will be a short meeting with regular business, a small piece of Masonic Education, and fellowship afterwards.

I hope you share my excitement at seeing you on the 14th for the ceremony, to your fellowship at the Banquet, and to our next 100 years together as Brothers!

Sincerely and Fraternally,

Master’s Message, February 2020

My Brethren,

If reports are to be believed, our DDGM Official Visit was a success!

R.W. Bro. Christie’s official visit proved memorable with, not one, but 2 entrances into the lodge. Bro. Hacker demonstrated his competence in the 3rd degree, and our Guest Speaker from the Men’s Mission gave us a thorough appreciation for the work that they do.

I would like to thank everyone who gave to the JW box at the Festive Board. The monies are gratefully received and will be sent to the Men’s mission to support their need.

Our March 14 Centennial Celebrations will soon be upon us. Grand Lodge will be in attendance for the afternoon ceremony, and food, wine, and dance will follow in the evening.

If you have not yet procured your tickets to the Banquet and Dance, please do so. Bro. Senior Warden can assist.
While on the topic of our 100th, I would be remiss if I did not ask again, if you would ensure that W. Bro. Lillico has your biography. Our History is the history of each member, and your biography is our tool to preserve it.

In closing, I would like to thank you for your kind words of encouragement and support that I’ve received due to the recent coronavirus outbreak. My Lady, Cindy, has chosen to remain in China to support her parents, and I have passed along your best wishes as she endures the quarantine.

Sincerely and Fraternally,

Master’s Message, January 2020

My Brethren,

I trust you all had a peaceful and relaxing Christmas. The New Year has always been a time of reflection for me, and since becoming a Mason it also serves to remind me of the special bond we share, and the gift that we represent to one another.

Our Lodge is celebrating our 100th Anniversary this year, and we will be sharing the centennial celebration with 3 other lodges.

Grand Lodge will be conducting a special Silver to Gold Ceremony in the afternoon of March 14 at Tudor Hall, and there will be a Banquet and Dance in the evening. Bro. Frank Sigouin, is our contact for tickets which are now on sale for $75 each. E-mail, call, or speak with Frank, and he will set you up.
For our DDGM visit this year Bro. Brook has reached out to the Men’s Mission to speak to us in Lodge about a culinary training program that they run. We will not only learn about this program, but will be availing of it for the post-meeting Banquet.

Our Annual Roll call will be conducted at this month’s meeting. If you are in touch with any Brother that has not been to Lodge lately, please take the opportunity to speak for them at Roll Call, and let us know how they are doing.

Sincerely and Fraternally,

Master’s Message, December 2019

My Brethren,

My neighbours have already turned on their Christmas lights so the holiday’s must soon be upon us!

I would like to wish you, your families and loved ones a peaceful, happy and restful season, and the chance to reflect on the year past, and the plans for the year ahead.

This month we will be holding our traditional potluck after the December regular meeting. If you’ve not already done so, please let our Junior Warden know how many will be in your party, and what dish you will be bringing. The meeting will be kept as short as possible so that we can focus on fellowship and our invited guests.

Planning for the 100th Centennial is moving ahead. Tickets are now on sale, and are $75 per person. This is a deal, as the meal alone is costing $71 and there will be wine on the table, butler service, and a live band for the dancing after the meal. Please mark March 14 in your calendars.

Bro. Secretary has received the gold-trimmed aprons, and our fingers are crossed that the Lodge Regalia order will have all the bits required. A special thank-you is due to W.Bros. Lillico and Harrison for their diligence in gathering the gold.

Our DDGM will be visiting St. Andrew’s Lodge on Dec. 5, which will feature a reading of the Old Charges by candlelight. As well, Doric Lodge has extended a particular welcome to Acacia for a 1st Degree on December 19.

I look forward to seeing you all soon, and wish you all the very best for the Holidays, and throughout 2020!

Sincerely and fraternally,

Master’s Message, November 2019

My Brethren,

October was a busy month, and I am sure you share my joy in seeing Bro. Adam Hacker raised to the Third Degree, and to having David Perkins as our newest member of Acacia.

The Travelling Gavel was delivered to us by Edinburgh Lodge, and it is now our obligation to bring it to Goodwood Lodge on Tuesday, November 5. As promised at my installation, I am making an effort to attend as many DDGM official visits as possible, and invite you to join me if it is within the length of your cable tow.

The visits this month are:

  • November 13, Sydney Albert Luke
  • November 21, Mississippi Lodge
  • November 22, Prince of Wales Lodge.

You can find these and other important dates on the District 1 Trestle Board: http://www.ottawadistrict1masons.ca/ddgm/ trestle-board Work is continuing on our 100th Anniversary Celebration. It is scheduled for March 14, 2020 at the Tudor Hall. W.Bro. Harrison will be putting in a bulk order for Gold Bordered aprons, so you should advise him if you wish to join in.

See you all at CGP and our Regular Meeting!

Master’s Message, September 2019

My Brethren,

I would like to welcome you all back to Lodge after a magnificent summer, and hope that you are as excited as I am to be a member of Acacia as we step into our 100th year.

Thanks are immediately due to W.Bros. Lillico and Harrison for their never-ending efforts on our behalf. While the rest of us vacationed, our Treasurer and Secretary kept the relentless machine of administration well-oiled.

Special thanks are due to V.W. Bro. Jackson and his Lady Jennifer who once again hosted the Summer BBQ. The feeling of fellowship was palpable and the Jacksons’ generosity, combined with the hard work of our Junior Warden, Derek Brook and his Lady Kelly, made it a great time.

As is tradition, our first meeting in the fall will be kicked off with Grand Lodge Appreciation Night.  This year’s GLAN banquet is being catered by V.W. Bro. Kevin Zeigler and promises to be a culinary treat. If you are at all able, I would encourage you to contact Bro. Brook right now for a ticket.

juniorwarden@acacialodge.org

Even if you cannot attend the banquet, please join us at the meeting following where R.W.Bro. Dennis Saikaley will be our Guest Speaker.

If you have not been out to Lodge recently, there is no time like the present to see old friends. Should you need a hand with transportation, or know of a Brother that needs our help, please let us know.

Master’s Message, May 2019

My Brethren,

During our April regular meeting we elected the Worshipful Master and Officers for the ensuing Masonic year. The following week at our Emergent meeting we held a step-up night where the Worshipful Master Elect and his Officers proved their proficiency. I must say that it appears the ensuing Masonic year is going to be memorable as the Worshipful Master Elect and his Officers have shown much enthusiasm for their new rolls.

Last May I was very humbled to be elected as your Master for the 2018/ 2019 Masonic year and proud to sit at the East. I must also thank every one of you who assisted me over the last 12 months. I never had to look far when I had a question or needed someone to help. I believe this is a testament to our Fraternity and to our Lodge. As my year as Worshipful Master is coming to a close I can only look back at the last 12 months that passed in what seems like the blink of an eye, I am very proud of how the year went. We were fortunate to always have had a good turnout at our meetings and received visitors from all over the world. At each meeting I would look around the Lodge where I would see many friendly faces that I am proud to call my Brother.

I wish the incoming Master and his officers much success at his installation and for his upcoming year in the East.

Fraternally,

Master’s Message, April 2019

My Brethren,

We are now truly into the spring season, warmer temperatures are welcome after the long cold winter we had here in Ottawa. Our March regular meeting was another enjoyable night. As I sat in the East I always appreciate a full Lodge room
with many Acacia Lodge members. There were also a large number of visitors including a visitor from Nickel Lodge in Sudbury as well Bro. Brad Landers from Doric Lodge. Bro. Landers was recently raised to the degree of a Master Mason
and the apron he wore belonged to his great grandfather Bro. Howard Orr who was a member of Acacia Lodge. The work of our regular meeting was Masonic education where W. Bro. Doug Campbell, R.W. Bro. Burchill and R.W. Bro. Jenkyns presented pieces of education that were well received and inspirational.

The night ended with many remaining for the festive board where R.W. Bro. Jenkyns read a Masonic poem. Brethren remained long after the food was gone to enjoy some fellowship. Two nights later a very large group of Acacia
Lodge members assisted me with delivering the travelling gavel to Mississippi Lodge in Almonte where we were treated to a packed Lodge room and witnessed a worthy brother being passed to the second degree.

Our April regular meeting is an important one as it is election night for the 2019/2020 Masonic year. We will also be having step up night on our emergent meeting. I hope you are able to make it out to both to cast your vote and watch the proficiency of next year’s Lodge Officers. Should you require transportation please contact myself or the Secretary and we can help make arrangements.

Master’s Message, March 2019

My Brethren,

With the beginning of March brings longer days and hopefully warmer weather as we get ready for spring. This winter brought cold temperatures and lots of snow to Ottawa. I hope you and your families were able to get outside and enjoy some
winter activities.

Our February meeting was a memorable night. Sitting in the East I can tell you nothing is more pleasing than seeing a full Lodge room. Our meeting began by Acacia Lodge welcoming
Members of Sidney Albert Luke Lodge who arrived to present the travelling gavel. They were followed by the Shrine Degree Team who attended and Raised a worthy brother to the Degree of a Master Mason. I also had the honour of presenting
a 25-year pin to W.Bro. Uhrig, recognizing his years of service to the Craft.

Our March meeting will include three short pieces of Masonic Education which I hope will inspire and expand our understanding and appreciation of the history of our Fraternity.

March also brings Acacia Lodge’s turn to present the Traveling Gavel. I hope your cable tow will allow you to join me on March 21st at Mississippi Lodge for this presentation.

I have been very pleased to see many new and old faces at our meetings this year and I encourage you to join us in Lodge even if you haven’t been able to make it out for a while and feel a little rusty. I believe one of the most important parts of being a Mason is attending Lodge. Should you require transportation please contact myself or the secretary and we can help make arrangements.

Master’s Message, February 2019

My Brethren,

We are now well into the winter months and the deep freeze is keeping many of us inside. I hope you are surrounded with family and friends and also finding time to go out and enjoy the season. Our January meeting was a busy one as we were joined by R. W. Bro. Adam Thompson on his official visit to Acacia Lodge as District Deputy Grand Master, Ottawa District 1. The meeting as always included the roll call and was followed by a worthy Brother being passed to the second degree. I know in speaking to R.W. Bro. Thompson he was pleased with the night and work put on by the degree team. Our newest Fellow Craft also expressed that the Degree was very well received and he is excited to get working on his Third Degree.

I hope you are able to join us for our February meeting where the Shrine Degree team will be attending the Lodge and conducting a Third Degree on a worthy brother. After the Degree the members of the Shrine will take a few minutes to explain the work they do, which I am personally looking forward to.

On February 26th I hope to have a Friend to Friend night at Westboro Masonic Temple. If you know of someone who has shown interest in the Craft and would make a good Mason please invite them out where they can ask questions and learn more about our Craft.

Brethren I hope you are able to make it out for our regular meeting. I have been pleased that at every meeting this year new and old faces have been in attendance. Should you need assistance getting to the |Lodge don’t hesitate to reach out to myself, the Secretary or one of the Wardens we would be happy to help and happy to see you in Lodge.

Master’s Message, January 2019

My Brethren,

Happy New Year to you all! I hope you all had time to be around and end enjoy the company of family and friends over the holiday season. It is a very busy time of year for many of us but also a time to reflect on the past and set goals for the
future.

While we conducted the business of our regular December meeting in the Lodge Room our family and friends were in the banquet hall below having a great time, we joined them after a very brief meeting. It was great to see such a large group of
friendly and familiar faces, judging by all the smiles and laughter everyone had a great evening.

W.Bro Dave Gravel arrived after our meeting to share that on his way into the lodge he came across a woman who had fallen to the ground with pain. Dave called 911 and remained with her and comforted her until help arrived. It is believed that she may have had a heart attack. The paramedics were thankful for the complete strangers who came to her aid. I would like to thank Dave for making a huge difference and likely helping to save her life.

Our January meeting is always a special one as we welcome our District Deputy Grand Master into our lodge on his official visit. The night will be memorable and as always we will be having the Acacia Lodge roll call followed by a second
degree.

Brethren I look forward to seeing you all in the
New Year.

Master’s Message, December 2018

My Brethren,

It looks like the snow came early this year and is here to stay. I have little doubt we will be having a white Christmas and holiday season.

During our regular October meeting we initiated Brother Adam Hacker into Masonry, and our lodge. It was a great evening and I would like to thank everyone who played a large and small role to make the initiation special for our newest member and brother. The evening also saw a large number of brethren who were able to make it out to be part of the night which I have no doubt will not be forgotten by our newest Brother. The meeting was followed by a festive board with lots of fellowship.

Our December meeting will be followed by the traditional Christmas Pot Luck including your family and friends. I hope to see many of you out as this night is always a fun night of socializing together in the banquet hall after the meeting. I always enjoy evenings that include those who have supported our masonic journeys over the years.

On a very sad note, last month we received news of the loss of one of our own, Bro Duncan Lillico. Duncan passed suddenly and unexpectedly on November 21st, 2018. This news came as a shock to all of us. Duncan is also the son of our historian W. Bro. Neil Lillico. Duncan left behind his wife, Kari and three children. All of our thoughts are with Neil and Duncan’s family through this very difficult time.

Master’s Message, November 2018

My Brethren,

September 21st saw a violent storm like none I recall every seeing in our region where 6 tornados reportedly touched down causing damage and power outages across many parts of our city. You’re Wardens and I made calls to many of you that we have not heard from in person or online to make sure you and your families were safe and did not require relief. We also used this opportunity to invite those we haven’t seen in awhile out to the lodge for our regular meeting, after all a big part of being a Mason and member of the lodge is attending Lodge and interacting with one another. I am happy to report that everyone fared well through the storm other than some food that had to be thrown out due to extended loss of power.

We had a very enjoyable and educational October Regular meeting which was dubbed a rusty mason night. During the meeting, we went up to the Third-Degree making stops in each degree to allow W. Bro. Sam Roberts to provide some information and education along the way. Very often this led to further discussions and education by various members of the lodge in attendance. It was announced at the meeting that all money collected in the Junior Wardens box will be donated to the Red Cross who are working to support those affected by the storms that hit the Ottawa area in late September. I am happy to say that a generous donation was collected and I thank everyone who contributed.

Our November meeting will include a 1st degree where we will welcome a new member to our lodge. I hope many of you can make it out to enjoy the evening and support our newest brother.

My Brethren

Last month we held our Grand Lodge Appreciation night which had a great turnout of Grand Lodge officers including the Deputy Grand Master, District Deputy Grand Masters from
Ottawa District 1 and 2 and a large number of grand lodge officers, visitors and Acacia lodge members.

During our meeting the Decons carried a message from the worshipful master and retrieved a package containing the apron and past master jewel worn by W.Bro. Proudman, who served as the Worshipful Master of Acacia in 1949-1950. W.Bro. Lillico presented some personal and Masonic history about W. Bro. Proudman along with a book containing many biographies ofAcacia Lodge Members which really delivered the message of how important it is to submit or update your biographies.

Our guest speaker was Deputy Grand Master R.W. Bro. David J Cameron who delivered a speech talking about possible directions that masonry may take in the future which I found
brought forward some excellent ideas and thought.

This month on our regular meeting we will be holding a rusty mason night. W. Bro. Sam Roberts will help sharpen our tools. I am sure we will all learn something we did not previously know. I also hope that many Acacia Lodge members can
make it out and if you have missed a few meetings, months or years I hope this night will inspire you to attend lodge and re-ignite the flame that brought you into masonry.

I look forward to seeing you in lodge.

My Brethren,

I hope everyone had a chance to enjoy the warm weather this summer and were able to have some time off to spend time with those close to you. I would like to express special thanks to our Junior Warden Bro. Frank Sigouin for organizing a successful summer barbeque and for V.W. Bro. Gordon and his wife Ann for hosting the event. The food was delicious and company excellent. We also enjoyed a perfect day to sit in the shade and enjoy some fellowship with our brothers and their families.

With the weather starting to cool and the days getting shorter it signals the coming of fall and also the start of our Masonic year.

Our first meeting of the Masonic year as always will be Grand Lodge Appreciation night which will begin with a delicious meal put on by the Daughters of the Nile. Our guest speaker for the evening is R.W. Bro. David J. Cameron, the Deputy Grand Master of the Grand Lodge of Canada in the Province of Ontario. I am also planning some education where I will bring two pieces of Acacia Masonic history back into the lodge.
I am very much looking forward to my year in the East and I also hope this year will bring many members who have for one reason or another not made it out to lodge over the last few years. If you haven’t been out in a while please make the time once or twice a month to attend if your schedule will allow and never worry if you are rusty in your work the important thing is to attend the meeting.

Brethren,

It’s hard to believe that it is already May. The time has flown by and another Masonic year is quickly coming to a close. Last
month we had a step-up night in which the Master elect and his team proved that they are ready for the upcoming year. Their ritual and floor work demonstrated their commitment to the lodge.

I would like to thank you all for your guidance and support throughout the past year, it made my work that much easier. Finally, I would like to take this opportunity to wish Steve and his newly elected and appointed team the best of luck in their year to come. Acacia is in good hands.

Brethren,

Welcome to April. Hopefully the spring weather will be along soon.

Thank you to all who attended the March meeting. I would like to thank W. Bro. Sam Roberts in particular for his inspiring talk. At this month’s meeting we will be voting on the application for initiation for Mr. Adam Jeffrey Hacker. Being April it is also the time for the election of officers for upcoming year. Both of these items help to play an important part in the continued prosperity of Acacia Lodge. I encourage as many of you as possible to participate.

As an added treat and depending on whether or not he has returned from his African safari, we will also have the opportunity to enjoy some Masonic education concerning officer progression from Worshipful Brother Jeff Christie of Sidney Albert Luke Lodge.

See you in lodge!

Master’s Message, March 2018

Brethren,

It is amazing how fast the year is going by. Only 3 months left in the Masonic year. At our February meeting Bro. Joel Porter was passed to the second degree. I would like to congratulate Bro. Porter on his work and thank all the brethren who participated as well as those who were there to show their support.

The work of this month’s meeting will include a ballot for a recently received application. There will also be a presentation on Masonic education by W. Bro. Sam Roberts.

Just a reminder: W. Bro. Neil Lillico in his role as Historian is still waiting to receive biographies from many of you. As our centennial is fast approaching, please take a few minutes to complete your biography and send it in. There is a template that you can use and W. Bro. Lillico would be more than happy to send it to you if you don’t already have it.

Hope to see you in lodge.

At this month’s meeting, we will be conferring the Fellowcraft degree on Bro. Joel Porter. I thank all who have agreed to participate and encourage as many of you as possible to attend to show your support.

There will be a practice for the degree in the lodge room at 10:00 AM on Saturday, February 17th.

Thank you to all who attended our October meeting. We received the Travelling Gavel from a contingent of Civil Service Lodge. I hope that we will be able to represent Acacia Lodge with an equally impressive representation when we take the Travelling Gavel to St. Andrew’s Lodge on November 2nd. The October meeting was concluded by a “Rusty Mason” talk by W. Bro. Rob Uhrig who focused on the Entered Apprentice Degree.

This month’s meeting should prove to be another interesting one. We will be investing the Secretary, Tyler and Inner Guard who were elected and appointed at the previous meeting. Brother Derek Brook will prove his proficiency in the third degree. And we will also have the opportunity to hold the Empty Chair ceremony in honour of those we have lost in the service of our country. I hope to see as many of you as possible at the meeting to show our appreciation.

Sincerely and fraternally,

W Bro. Jeff Campbell

Master’s Message, October 2017

Greetings Brethren,

Our first meeting of the year, Acacia’s Grand Lodge Appreciation Night was a success. R.W. Bro. Charlie Woods presented an insightful and timely talk. We also had the honour of presenting V.W.Bro. Ron Hobson with his 50-year pin. These presentations provide us with an opportunity of learning a bit of the history of the lodge through the recollections of our esteemed brethren. I would also like to take the opportunity to thanks Brother Junior Warden with arranging the festive board and the Daughters of the Nile for putting on a great meal.

At this month’s meeting, we will hold an election to fill the office of Secretary. W. Bro. Rob Uhrig will also lead us in a “Rusty Mason’s Night” where he will cover elements of the ritual as well as any questions regarding the work that we may have. I strongly encourage as many of you as possible to attend.

Hope to see you there!

Sincerely and fraternally,

W Bro. Jeff Campbell

Master’s Message, September 2017

Brethren,

Welcome Back! Brethren, I hope you and your families had a great summer. It is hard to believe that it’s almost over.
We had a great summer picnic hosted by Jenny and Michael Jackson at their lovely home. I would like to thank Don Learning, our Junior Warden for all his work in organizing the event. I would like to thank all the brethren who were able to attend the Grand Lodge communication this summer. As you all probably know by now, our new Grand Master is M.W. Bro Paul Todd from St. John’s Lodge in Carleton Place. It should be a very exciting next two years for the Ottawa districts.

Our Masonic Year starts off with Acacia’s traditional Grand Lodge appreciation night. It is always well attended by many members of Grand Lodge. The guest speaker will be R.W. Bro. Charlie Woods, Chairman of Leadership Development and Officer Progression, Board of General Purposes. I would encourage as many members as possible to attend as it would be a great opportunity to show our appreciation and interest. Please contact the Junior Warden, Secretary or me if you would like a ticket. We will also have the pleasure of presenting V. W. Bro. Ron Hobson with his 50 year pin.

I hope to see you there.

Master’s Message, May 2017

My Brethren,

The snow has gone the trees are blooming and the days are longer. Spring is finally here and with it, the end of my time in the east as Master of this lodge. What a year we have had. From our Empty Chair ceremony to the honouring of a worthy and deserving Past Master. This year we all laughed, we all worked and we all learned. As I reflect on this year, I am constantly reminded of the opportunities I had to apply the lessons in our rituals and ceremonies to gain a stronger understanding of the principles of Freemasonry. This my brethren is what makes use the pillars of society.

Along the way, I watched as many of you rise to new challenges, became leaders, stepped out of your comfort zones but most of all, supported each other. With this and the support you have given me, you all made this year a great and memorable one for me; as my first time in the Master’s chair. For this, I thank you.

Our Emergent meeting saw the election of W Bro Jeff Campbell and his team to lead Acacia into the ensuing Masonic year. He has an excellent team assembled and I look forward to the coming year under his leadership. I now you will all support him as you have supported me. Congratulations on your election and the best of luck to you and your team!

Finally, my brethren, a very good brother who has passed to the Grand Lodge above told me that when the Tyler knocks the lodge is a place of peace and harmony. We are more than just a handshake. We are and strive to be the embodiment of brotherly love, relief and truth.

Thank you all for your support and have a wonderful, summer with your families.

Master’s Message, April 2017

My Brethren,

Last month was another great meeting. Brother Derek Brook was raised to the sublime degree of a Master Mason by the Shrine Degree Team. Brother Derek ably proved his proficiency in the former degree. It’s clear there was a great deal of work and dedication by Brother Brook and his sponsors. A job well done. Congratulations!

Next month we will have both a Regular and Emergent meeting. Our regular meeting will be our customary election of the officers of the ensuing Masonic year. As spring is the beginning of a new season so is elections the beginning of establishing the leadership of our lodge for the next Masonic year.

Our emergent meeting will give the newly elected and appointed officers an opportunity to flex their muscles in their new positions. I hope to see a goodly number of you out to support them.

As I mentioned, the Shrine degree team conducted an excellent degree for our Brother Derek Brook. Not only was this an opportunity to see this team conduct excellent work but also a time to learn about the philanthropy the Shrine is known for. It brings to mind the virtue of charity. In our daily lives we are regularly approached by people, co-workers, organizations, etc. requesting financial support. I think charity is not only the change you put in the Tim Horton Children’s foundation box but also the genuine kindness you show to all human beings. I personally know the depth a smile can give when you give a coffee to a homeless person, help someone with a flat tire or even simply assisting someone with heavy bags. Those random acts of genuine kindness will contribute to our growth not only as Masons but as pillars of society.

In closing, we’ve all heard, charity begins at home, pay it forward, do unto others as you would have done unto you, etc. Consider this, charity; “the Mason who is in possession of this virtue may be deemed to have arrived at the summit of Masonry.” Thank you for your support!

Master’s Message, March 2017

My Brethren,

Our last regular meeting was fantastic!! I know that W. Bro. Bruce Quinney was not just surprised but completely shocked! The word went out and brethren came out of the woodworks to be part of this wonderful evening. As you know Bruce is that silent brother who lends support where and whenever possible. He is truly a kind, individual who makes me want to be a better person. I want to thank you all for your participation, especially R.W. Bro. “Shepherd on the Hill” Burchill for ringing the dinner bell and getting the Hillbillies out. Also, W. Bro. “Magoo” Chris Statham for piling the Klowns into a tiny car to be there. The excellent words of remembrance by V.W. Bro’s Gordon and Jackson and W. Bro’s Lillico and Morrison had a very positive impact. Finally, Thanks to W Bro Rob Uhrig for helping to end the night on a positive note.

Brethren, March will be here in a matter of hours! On March 8th, we’ll be taking the travelling gavel to St John’s Lodge, Carlton Place. When Doric Lodge brought the gavel to Acacia, they had a strong contingent. I hope that we at Acacia can muster up a group of at least the perfect number to bring the gavel to St John’s. St John’s will be tiling at 1930 Hrs.

Our next regular meeting will see our worthy brother, Bro Derek Brook, raised to the sublime degree of a Master Mason. No need to panic as the Shrine Degree team will be conducting the ceremony. As we are coming to the end of the year, I look back and see you have done excellent work at every meeting! You have shown dedication to the lodge and supported me. In March, we’ll let the Shrine do the work and you my brethren, rest. This will also be an opportunity to learn about the Shrine and the great work they do. Enjoy the evening! If you’re part of the Shrine degree team, thank you for your great work!!

Lastly, this month I saw the heart of our lodge come forward. Three of our brethren lost a loved one. I saw offers of condolences of all forms as well as brethren at the celebration of life. It’s clear we’re there for each other, when we need that hand, when we want that hand and when we don’t want that hand but know it’s always there to help. Master’s Message, November 2016

Brethren,

I hope that you and your families are well and preparing for the winter season. Last month, the regular and emergent meetings were excellent. Our Director of Ceremonies, led us through a first-rate Rusty Mason Night. It was a successful evening of interactive review and discussion. Many Thanks to W. Bro. Rob Uhrig for such an exceptional evening.

Our emergent meeting saw Bro. Derek Brook being passed to the second degree. Bro. Brook’s work was of an superb standard and reflected well on the efforts of his sponsors. The work of the degree team was also of the highest standard. Well done by all.

This month will be a busy one. The work of our regular meeting will be an Empty Chair Ceremony. We will pay our respects to those who have given the ultimate sacrifice during the wars and those brethren who have passed to the Grand Lodge Above. As this will be in conjunction with Remembrance Day, past and present service members may wear medals and decorations in accordance with the Constitution. There will be a practice in the lodge room for those involved in Saturday November 12th.

The work of our emergent meeting will be to initiate Mr. Joel Porter into Ancient Freemasonry. There will be a degree team practice on the 19th of November in the lodge room. This is another great opportunity to support the lodge by getting involved in the degree team. Please let me know if there are any pieces of work you’d like to try.

Lastly brethren, remember when you are in lodge you are among brothers. We are all here to support each other and experience the principles of Freemasonry – Brotherly Love, Relief and Truth. I appreciate your dedication to Acacia.
